ACLU of Hawaiʻi Launches New Podcast, Rooted in Resistance

HONOLULU, Hawaiʻi — The American Civil Liberties Union of Hawaiʻi (ACLU-HI) is launching Rooted in Resistance, a new podcast exploring the people, movements, histories, and ideas at the heart of the fight for civil liberties in Hawaiʻi.

Through conversations with organizers, advocates, community leaders, attorneys, artists, and others working for change, Rooted in Resistance will examine the issues shaping Hawaiʻi today while connecting them to the longer histories of resistance, organizing, and collective action that have shaped our communities.

“Resistance is not new to Hawaiʻi,” said Salmah Y. Rizvi Executive Director of ACLU-HI. “It is part of our history and continues through the people who organize, speak out, protect one another, and fight for a more just future. Rooted in Resistance gives us another way to share those stories and connect the work happening today to the movements that came before us.”

The podcast will cover a range of civil liberties issues, including free speech, racial justice, immigrant rights, reproductive freedom, LGBTQ+ rights, privacy, policing, incarceration, voting rights, Indigenous rights, and other issues affecting people and communities across the Hawaiian Kingdom.

Each episode will create space for important conversations about the people behind the headlines and the movements behind the change—highlighting not only what communities are fighting for, but the histories, relationships, and collective power that make all of our work possible.

“Some of the most important stories about civil liberties don't always make the news,” said Sergio Alcubilla Community Engagement Director. “They live in the experiences of people organizing in their communities, challenging systems, and reimagining something different. This podcast is an opportunity to listen to those stories.”

The first episode of Rooted in Resistance will be released Friday, October 2, 2026, with new episodes available on Apple Podcast, Spotify, and YouTube.

Listeners can follow Rooted in Resistance across the ACLU of Hawaii’s social media channels for updates, episode announcements, and more.
