The University of Hawai‘i, Thompson School of Social Work & Public Health invited the ACLU Hawai‘i to present a continuing education training for social workers at Queen’s Medical Center on April 29, 2025.  Topics included:

The rights of transgender people under Hawaii law, particularly in the healthcare setting

What is happening with trans rights at the federal level and how that does (and doesn’t) impact Hawai‘i law

Best practices for interacting with transgender patients

This training was very well-received, with participants commenting:

“My biggest take away from this presentation is that there are a lot more legal protections and avenues to challenge attacks against the trans community. It’s important to not buy into fear tactics and stay up to date on what is happening so we can best empower our clients and equip them with accurate information - especially with so much disinformation out there.”

“That state laws/ statutes differ from federal law in the way they are implemented, enforced & protected. Therefore, just because an executive order has been announced does not necessarily mean it will impact each state the same.”

“Now, more than ever, we need to advocate for our transgender (Mahu) patients/clients/friends!”

“Join the ACLU!”
