HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The American Civil Liberties Union celebrated 60 years of service in Hawaii with a free event on Sunday.

The People’s Fair took place at the Capitol Modern and celebrated the ACLU of Hawaii’s 60 years of championing civil liberties.

Organizers said the event aimed to honor our past victories, acknowledge the present challenges, and look forward to a future when all enjoy freedom, justice, and dignity.

“The Trump Administration is targeting a lot of civil liberties and civil rights, many of which have been in place for decades, and so our mission is to defend the Bill of Rights,” said Pam Lichty, board member of ACLU of Hawaii.

The event will have live musical performers, keiki activities, local artists, poets, and expert panel discussions on current issues impacting civil liberties.

“I believe that our Constitution is being totally disregarded by our government, by our federal government in particular, and they’re taking advantage of the fact that people are not paying attention, so I think that it’s important that we wake up,” said attendee Carol Tribbey.

Founded in 1965, the mission of the Hawaii affiliate of the ACLU is to protect the civil liberties contained in the state and federal constitutions through litigation, legislation, and public education programs
